The Old Town of Santa Pau: Breathing History
Walking through the old town of Santa Pau is like stepping back in time to the medieval era. This charming village, one of the main tourist hubs in Garrotxa, has preserved its essence to this day, making it a must-visit for those who want to explore the medieval heritage of Catalonia, as it played a crucial role during the remences rebellion.
The history of Santa Pau is told from the original layout of its narrow and cobblestoned alleys branching off from the main square called the Plaça Major, a beautiful arcaded square where markets and fairs were once held and which today houses various gastronomic establishments. The square is dominated by the Gothic-style Santa Maria Church, adjacent to the impressive Santa Pau Castle, which still retains interesting Gothic windows, remnants of the originally modified construction. Likewise, numerous details such as lintels, doors, and windows with wrought iron grilles are maintained throughout the old town of Santa Pau.
Don’t forget that this enchanting medieval village is the perfect setting to taste a local culinary gem: the fesols of Santa Pau (PDO), a local variety of fine beans with a delicate flavor provided by the volcanic soil in which they are grown.
Additionally, its proximity to the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park makes visiting Santa Pau a perfect combination of culture and nature, with a wide range of activities available at the Tourist Office.
