  • Besalú

The town of Besalú is located at an important and traditional crossroads to the east of Garrotxa. Bisuldunum, its original name, was a fortress between two rivers: the Fluvià in the south and the Capellades in the north.

Besalú was the seat of an important independent county. It has a medieval historical-artistic complex considered one of the best preserved in Catalonia. The old church of Montestir de Sant Pere from the twelfth century is part of this ensemble, of which the originality of its ambulatory stands out; the church of Sant Vicenç from the twelfth century, where a lateral Gothic chapel dedicated to the True Cross is preserved; the facade of the old hospital church of Sant Julià from the twelfth century; the Casa de Cornellà, a 12th century Romanesque monument and the Gothic hall of the Royal Court. The entire Jewish community stands out, and especially the Micvé.

Besalú’s Micvé or ritual bathhouse is, along with Girona’s, the only Jewish bathing site discovered so far in the Iberian Peninsula. It is a barrel-vaulted stone house, typically Romanesque, from the 12th century.

The majestic Romanesque bridge over the river Fluvià is another vestige of the County of Besalú, which together with Barcelona, Ripoll and Girona saw the birth of the Catalan nation. Besalú should not only be valued for its monuments, but also for the medieval atmosphere offered by its streets full of memories.

The tourist office has audio guides with audio description for people with visual difficulties. It also warns of possible obstacles that may be encountered during the route.
