The Royal Road Vic-Olot: A Historic Itinerary Between Mountains and Valleys
The Royal Road from Vic to Olot (and vice versa) is a historic route that winds through the spectacular landscape of the Osona and Garrotxa zones, connecting the two capitals: Vic and Olot. Of medieval origin, it was used in the past by merchants, travelers, and pilgrims, but today this path is a route for hikers and bike enthusiasts who seek to experience the beauty and history of Catalonia in an active and immersive manner.
Although it can be done in both directions, we recommend starting in Vic, as the climb will be much gentler. Throughout the journey, you will pass through changing landscapes that will take you over hills, through dense forests, and offer views of the imposing volcanoes of la Garrotxa. The route, which retains much of the original cobblestone, will allow you to discover both the local fauna and flora as well as constructive elements that help trace the history of these two regions: small hermitages, ancient bridges and farmhouses. Once in la Garrotxa, admire the area of Marrades, where the path is especially well-preserved, and constructions such as the Hostalot bridge.
This 44 km route can be completed in a single day, but you can split it into two stages if you want to take it more leisurely. If you opt for the latter, plan well, as there are few accommodation and dining options on the stretch between Cantonigròs and Sant Esteve d’en Bas.
