Serrats, steep ridges like those of Cabrera dels Llancers, Freixaneda or El Puigsacalm, surround meadows and forests of beech, oak and oak until you reach the plain of Bas. A plain that has one of the most fertile soils in all of Catalonia. Meanwhile, a multitude of creeks and streams furrow the plain pouring their waters into the Fluvià river, after it was formed by jumping from the peaks of Falgars.
The Puigsacalm and the massif of Santa Magdalena form one of the most characteristic silhouettes of the area. From its summits you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views over much of Catalonia.
The concentration of agricultural land among the farmers of the valley – plot concentration – and the creation of the farmers’ cooperative, at the beginning of the 70s, gave a notable boost to the agricultural activity of the area, and drew the current layout of roads that connect the various centers of population and neighborhoods.
But the Vall d’en Bas is also history, being a land of memories. The municipality still preserves the farmhouse where the leader of the farmers Francesc de Verntallat was born. In memory of the Remence movement, the Terra de Remences cycle tour is organized every year, the most popular in all of Catalonia.
The Vall d’en Bas has two centers cataloged as historical-artistic ensembles: the Vila del Mallol, located on a hill and which was for centuries the administrative capital of the viscounty of Bas, and the center of Hostalets d’en Bas , which has its origins in hostels located at the foot of the old rural road that went from Olot to Vic.
