The Old Bridge of Besalú: A Gateway to History

Emerging from the mists of time, the old bridge is a majestic portal to one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Catalonia: Besalú. This work of Romanesque engineering has withstood the test of time with exceptional conservation, thanks to subsequent renovations that have in no way diminished its magic.

This iconic, slender bridge, designed to withstand the force of the water without damaging it or the nearby houses, has become a symbol of this municipality in la Garrotxa. With its hexagonal fortified tower, 105 meters in length and seven imposing arches, it connects the past and present, captivating the imagination of visitors from around the world, including writers and filmmakers.

Cross this gateway and you will find yourself among fascinating stone streets, in shops where you can buy a special souvenir to bring home and remember this beautiful day or in restaurants where you can eat a local specialty. Or let yourself be carried back in time in the most immersive way with the Besalú Medieval Fair on the first weekend of September.

But if you’re looking for an unusual experience, you can visit the old bridge of Besalú from below: there is a route suitable for all audiences, on foot or by bike, that follows the Fluvià riverbed through the area known as the Anella Verda (Green Ring).

Traveling over or under the old bridge of Besalú is an essential experience during which you won’t be able to stop taking photos of its endless idyllic corners.
