Structured in several areas, the Espai Cràter exhibition explains the volcanoes of La Garrotxa and the world, as well as the particular relationship between volcanoes and their environment. It does so in a 100% interactive way and through various exhibition languages: audiovisuals, immersive experiences, photographs or videomapping.
It has a 15 m2 model, which explains the formation of La Garrotxa, gamification proposals and a large clay slope, which allows us to see the insides and verify that we are inside the Puig del Roser volcano.
The permanent exhibition at Espai Cràter has been curated by Geociències Barcelona – CSIC and developed by Indissoluble. In terms of content and form, it is the reference exhibition in volcanology at a national level.

Toni Casamor and Anna Codina, from VOL Studio Architecture, are the authors of the building, designed to also be part of the experience: it is semi-underground and inside a volcano. Visitors can see the interior of the Puig del Roser volcano in the exhibition room.
The Espai Cràter is a building with access and routes suitable for everyone, which has four different rooms. The Chamber houses the permanent exhibition on volcanology and society where you can discover the volcanoes of La Garrotxa in an experiential way in a global context. The Sala Magma, ideal for hosting a wide variety of cultural and business events, has a capacity for 110 people and has unbeatable acoustics, high-definition projection and streaming service. The Aula Bufador is the space where educational activities are mainly carried out, with direct access to the exhibition room. Finally, the Zona sísmica, on the first floor, is the creative laboratory, designed to host stays or small-format presentations.
The facilities are completed by the lobby, gender-neutral toilets, the merchandising and zero-kilometer store and the 3,000 m2 urban park that covers it. In this large green area, visitors will also be able to see a dry stone wall, a technique declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
In line with the project’s philosophy of addressing global challenges that affect the local level, Espai Cràter is a sustainable building, which uses mostly geothermal energy. It has up to 17 wells 100 m deep, and does not consume any fossil energy for its operation.
As a socio-educational space, Espai Cràter is committed to opening up to the people and groups of the city, to being an active part of its development and to creating an inclusive and valuable educational proposal. Thus, it has developed a Socio-Educational Project with the UdG and environmental education companies in the territory, which has laid the foundations for the guide to educational activities.
Espai Cràter offers thirteen integrative educational activities, for different educational levels and that allow students to know and love the world around them, to learn to take care of it. The proposals are designed to generate a positive experience, stimulate curiosity and achieve knowledge through observation, experience and experimentation. The aim is to awaken the scientific and research spirit in students.
As a scientific space, it wants to become a reference in the field of volcanology, forging alliances with educational centers, institutions and entities in order to promote projects and activities. The first step has been the signing of an agreement with the CSIC, which allows it to access the most important scientific space in the State and be an active part of large-scale international research and impact projects.
Exhibitions, audiovisuals, debates, workshops… Espai Cràter designs a program where the diversity of proposals, forms of participation and languages are the axes to reach the entire community. A complete commitment to the creation and promotion of socio-culture from the public space.
Espai Cràter is a contemporary project that works in an innovative, experiential and participatory way to address global challenges that affect the local level. A territorial facility that generates value in the Garrotxa region, developing economic, social and ecological sustainability. Espai Cràter welcomes ideas that help preserve our landscape, understand the world and create a better society.
