The Volcanoes of Sant Marc and Puig Roig: The Silent Guardians
The volcanoes of Sant Marc and Puig Roig, located near Sant Feliu de Pallerols in la Garrotxa, are two intriguing examples of the volcanic activity that has shaped this region of Catalonia. Less known than other peaks in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, these volcanoes offer a more intimate experience, ideal for nature lovers seeking to hike the Garrotxa’s volcanoes off the beaten path.
Sant Marc volcano, with its horseshoe-shaped crater surrounded by beech and oak forests, is a place of peace and beauty. It is accessed via a circular path that connects it with the other volcano in the area, Puig Roig volcano. The latter offers a different perspective of a volcano: here you can observe an old quarry of compact basalt, the rock formed from the cooling of volcanic magma, known as the Sesquer quarry.
It’s a two-hour marked trail that will take you through landscapes gently reclaimed by nature, accompanied by panoramic views where you can observe various species of plants and animals that have adapted their lives to this unique volcanic environment, an example of resilience.
