The Brugent Protected Area Pools: Biodiversity Havens
La Garrotxa is commonly recognized for its volcanic nature, but it also stands out due to another natural element: water. In the southeast corner of the zone, the Brugent river and one of its tributaries, the Cogolls stream, have created a biological corridor of high natural value on their way to the Ter river, the Brugent Protected Area, which is part of Catalonia’s Network of Protected Natural Spaces.
Due to its unique morphology, the area has become one of the most attractive natural treasures of the region. Natural gradients create small waterfalls and in its lower area there are natural pools known as gorgues, spaces where the well-being and conservation of biodiversity seek an essential balance for the environment. Here are found a well-preserved riparian forest and habitats for the reproduction, feeding, and refuge of highly interesting animal species. Additionally, the water quality and natural features of this environment attract numerous migratory animals that come to drink.
Venturing into this fluvial system means experiencing a complete sensory journey, as you connect with the natural biodiversity of Sant Feliu de Pallerols and les Planes d’Hostoles. A great way to explore this space is to join the free guided tours, available for both adults and children, to learn about the natural heritage surrounding us or to undertake some of the trails that traverse the gorgues. The educational value is the key to maintain the balance of this space in perfect health, for us and for future generations.
