The Juvinyà Castle: A Magical Gateway to the Medieval Past

As if time had stood still, in the very heart of Sant Joan les Fonts, you can admire one of the finest examples of medieval civil architecture in La Garrotxa, the Estada Juvinyà, a stronghouse popularly known as the Juvinyà Castle, notable for its exceptional nature.

Its history dates back to the 12th century, when the tower, predating the house, would have been constructed, later to be followed by the house itself, attached to the oldest part of the complex. The manor house, belonging to the family of knights who gave the residence its name, features a typical structure with a single central hall of rectangular plan, solid walls, and few openings. By the 15th century, the property had passed into the hands of various peasant families until the present day when it was acquired by the Sant Joan les Fonts Town Hall and fully restored.

Visit it and let your imagination wander among the many unique details of the stage: the beautiful arched door that provides access via the bridge over the water channel, the twin Romanesque window, or the festejadors (stone seats placed at each side of the windows).

Excellent for visiting with children, inside the house hosts a permanent exhibition on the history of the monument and the Juvinyà knight’s family.
