Discover la Garrotxa, a land of contrasts. On one hand, tranquil beech forests weave through volcanic flows, creating a gentle, undulating landscape. On the other, the rugged cliffs and gorges transform into the steep landscapes of Alta Garrotxa.
From charming stone villages, we delve into Olot, the region’s heart, a friendly-sized city brimming with shops, services, and a rich array of museums and heritage sites, inviting more than a day’s stay. Explore the vibrant open-air markets, festivals, and traditional celebrations with giants and big heads.
In the upper basin of the Fluvià River, this welcoming land with mild weather beckons discovery through over 40 volcanoes, basaltic cliffs, natural parks, and museum spaces. Move through these landscapes sustainably with Rumbus, TEISA’s public transport connecting key locations on weekends and holidays. Also explore on foot, by bike, or hot air balloon; suitable for families or couples, every choice is valid!
La Garrotxa, an inclusive and sustainable land, invites you to both lose and find yourself.
The Garrotxa region is located at the eastern end of the Pyrenees and has an area of 735 km2, spread over 21 municipalities.
MunicipalitiesIn La Garrotxa you can observe two completely different types of landscape: over 40 volcanoes and several lava flows spread over a large part of the southern half, which form a smooth landscape without many unevennesses, protected by the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone; from the Fluvià river valley to the north, the landscape changes radically. It becomes more abrupt and steep with abundant cliffs and gorges, which give way to the Alta Garrotxa, an area declared a Natural Interest Area, in the same way as the Collsacabra and the Puigsacalm massif, both located in the west of the county.
The valleys of Bas, Hostoles and Bianya articulate a large part of Garrotxa, one of the most wooded counties in Catalonia. The sunny slopes are occupied by oak trees. Oak groves predominate in the rest of the areas – in Olot you can see some Pénol oak – and beech forests are found in the more humid areas.
The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park has several pedestrian itineraries that pass through the most interesting places in the Natural Park. Most of them are signposted with the park’s signage and often connect with those of the Itinerànnia trail network. Therefore, from the itineraries of the Natural Park, you can walk to any other point in Garrotxa, Ripollès or Alt Empordà through Itinerànnia.
